What is triple (HR+++) glass?

What is triple (HR+++) glass?, Triple glass, also called HR+++ or triple glass, is high-efficiency glass that is extra insulating. Triple glass consists of a metal coating with three glass plates with two cavities in between. The space between the glass sheets is filled with an environmentally friendly noble gas. The advantage of this gas filling is that the cold from outside cannot be passed on to the inside and vice versa, the heat from inside is not transported to the outside. The metal coating in the cavity ensures that the heat from, for example, the radiator is reflected and therefore largely remains in your home.

Make your home more sustainable with triple glazing

Are you considering renovating or making your home more sustainable in the near future? Then triple glazing is a good option. Triple glazing is currently the most insulating glass on the market. It is no less than 5 times more insulating than single glass. Triple glass has a very low U-value between 0.5 and 0.9. The higher the number of the U-value, the more heat the glass lets through, so the worse the insulation.

Why triple glass? The advantages and disadvantages of triple glass:

  • There are many advantages to triple glass:
  • Triple glass is the type of glass with the best insulation value.
  • The u-value of triple glass is +/- 0.6. This means that there is hardly any heat loss. The lower the U-value, the better the glass insulates.

Increased living comfort

Triple glass ensures a pleasant indoor climate in both hot and cold days. In the winter, the glass keeps the heat in and keeps it cool in the summer. Triple glazing also means you are less bothered by the cold.

  • Reduced heating costs
  • Triple glazing saves you money on your energy bill.
  • Less heat is lost, so you don’t have to burn as much
  • Triple glass is also extra sound-absorbing
  • What are the disadvantages of triple glass?
  • Condensation on the outside

This is both an advantage and a disadvantage. It means that the glass insulates exceptionally well. However, condensation can be a nuisance because one cannot see the outside properly. To solve this, ventilation through, for example, a ventilation grille is sensible.

Fits (almost) never in existing frames

Triple glass almost never fits in existing frames. If you want HR+++ glass, you must also take into account the installation and costs of new windows. This makes installing triple glass very expensive. Below you can read whether your frames are suitable for triple glazing.

  • Less light through triple glazing
  • Because triple glass consists of more glass plates, the amount of light is smaller.

Can triple glass be installed in my existing frames?

Because triple glass contains an extra glass plate and cavity, it is thicker and extra heavy. The thickness of triple glass varies from 28 millimeters to 40 millimeters wide. HR+++ glass is about 10 kilograms heavier per square meter than normal double glazing. These two factors mean that not every frame is suitable for triple glazing. If you are going from single to triple glazing, you must have new frames installed. This also applies to double glazing and triple glazing in many cases. Most new-build homes already contain, or are designed for, triple glazing.

Alternative to triple glass: HR++ glass

Do you currently have standard double or single glazing? Then your frames are often not designed for triple glazing. HR++ glass is then the best alternative for making your home more sustainable. HR++ glass only consists of two glass plates, so you almost never have to install new frames. HR++ is also cheaper than triple glass and offers a good insulation value.

We see that many of our customers ultimately opt for HR++ glass, because proportionately the investment well outweighs the return. You can quickly calculate the price of HR++ glass and your energy savings with our handy calculation tool.
