Garage Door Opener Not Responding: How to Find the Real Fault

Openers fail in a handful of distinct patterns, and each pattern points at a different part — which is useful, because the fix ranges from a two-minute adjustment you can do yourself to a component replacement that needs a tech.
Work through it in order. Most of the time you will find the answer before you get to the expensive possibilities.
Start by separating the opener from the door
This is the step people skip, and skipping it causes more misdiagnosis than anything else. Pull the emergency release cord — the red handle hanging from the trolley — with the door fully closed. Now lift the door by hand.
A balanced door should move with moderate effort and stay put around waist height when you let go. If it is brutally heavy, slams down, or shoots up, the problem is not the opener. It is the counterbalance system, and the opener has simply been straining against a load it was never designed to carry. An opener moves a balanced door; it does not lift a door.
That distinction matters because motors that “died” are very often motors that burned out fighting a broken spring. Replacing the opener without correcting the balance just kills the new one. The symptom patterns and what they mean
Nothing at all — no light, no hum, no click
This is a power problem nine times out of ten. Check that the unit is plugged in properly, then check the breaker, then check the outlet itself with something else — garage ceiling outlets are frequently on a GFCI circuit that trips from a nearby exterior receptacle. If the wall control has no lights either, you are looking at supply, not the opener.
The remote does nothing but the wall button works
Almost always a remote issue: dead battery, lost programming, or interference. Replace the battery first, then re-pair the remote using the learn button on the motor head. If several remotes stopped working on the same day, the receiver logic lost its stored codes, which happens after a power surge.
Motor runs but the door does not move
The motor and the door have become disconnected. Either the trolley is still in manual-release mode — reconnect it by pulling the cord toward the door and running the opener until it re-latches — or the drive gear inside the motor head has stripped. Stripped nylon gears are common on chain-drive units past about ten years and they make a distinctive grinding whir with no movement.
Door closes partway then reverses
Two candidates. If it reverses at the same point every time, something physical is in the way or the travel and force settings are off. If it reverses at random points or right at the floor, look at the safety sensors.
Door will not close, and the opener light blinks
That blink is a sensor code. It is telling you the photo-eye beam is broken.
Safety sensors: the most common culprit
The two small units mounted about six inches off the floor on each track have to see each other continuously. Any interruption stops the door from closing — that is the law and the design intent, and it is not something to bypass.
Check, in this order:
- Obstruction. A bike wheel, a garbage bin, a stack of boxes, a coiled hose — anything in the beam path.
- Lens dirt. Dust film, cobwebs, or road grit on either lens. Wipe both with a dry cloth.
- Alignment. Each sensor has an LED. Typically one glows steady as the sender and the other glows steady only when it is receiving. A flickering or dark receiver LED means the pair are not pointed at each other. Loosen the wing nut, move the bracket a few millimetres, and watch the LED settle.
- Sunlight. Low direct sun on the receiver lens at certain times of day genuinely blinds it. If the fault appears only in the late afternoon, this is why.
- Wiring. Staples driven through the sensor wire during a previous install, or a wire pinched behind a bracket, produce an intermittent fault that comes and goes with temperature.
When it is the logic board
If power is confirmed, the door is balanced, the sensors are clean and aligned, and multiple functions have failed together — the wall button, the remotes, and the light all misbehaving — the control board is the likely suspect. Surges from lightning or utility switching are the usual cause. On an older unit the honest calculation is whether a board plus labour is worth putting into a motor that is near end of life.
What not to do
Do not disconnect or tape over the safety sensors to force the door shut. Do not adjust the force settings upward to overcome resistance — that removes the very protection that stops the door on an obstruction. And do not touch the torsion spring, the cables, or the bottom brackets. Those hold the entire stored energy of the counterbalance and are the one area of garage door service that genuinely injures people who improvise.

Why does my door work fine in summer and fail in winter?
Cold thickens the grease in the rollers and hinges, which increases the load the opener has to overcome. A marginal spring or a tired motor that copes in July will hit its limit in January. Lubricating the rollers, hinges and springs before winter usually settles it.
How long should an opener last?
Ten to fifteen years is typical, depending heavily on cycles per day. A door opened four times daily ages far faster than one opened twice.
Can I replace just the remote instead of the whole system?
Usually yes, if the opener has a learn button and a known frequency. Very old units without rolling-code security may not have a compatible replacement available, and those are worth upgrading anyway.
My opener reverses only when it is closing, never opening. Why?
