A garage door isn’t heavy because the door is heavy; it’s dangerous because several hundred pounds of force is held in a system designed to be balanced. When one cable fails, that balance is gone and the load shifts to hardware that can’t handle it alone.

One side rises faster than the other, or the door sits visibly tilted in the opening. This is the most common first symptom, and it means one cable has stretched, slipped on its drum, or started to unwind.
Fraying near the bottom bracket
Look at where the cable attaches at the bottom corner of the door. Broken individual strands sticking out — sometimes called a bird cage — mean the cable is on borrowed time. This spot fails first because it sits closest to floor moisture and takes the sharpest bend.
Slack cable when the door is down
A cable that hangs loose with the door closed usually means it’s come off the drum. The door may still operate, but it’s now being held by hardware doing double duty.
Grinding or slapping sounds
A cable rubbing where it shouldn’t makes a distinct sound near the top of the travel. It’s easy to mistake for a roller problem, but rollers squeak and cables scrape.
Why cables fail

Winding bars slipping, a drum set at the wrong position, or a spring released without control — these are the incidents that put people in hospital.
There’s also a subtler issue. Cables have to be matched to the door’s height and drum size, and both cables must be set to identical tension. A door with mismatched cable tension will run crooked, wear its rollers unevenly, and eventually damage the track. Getting it close isn’t good enough.
If a cable has already snapped, the safest move is to stop using the door entirely — don’t run the opener to test it — and get cable repair done properly.
Cables and openers get confused constantly
A lot of calls that start as “my opener is broken” turn out to be cable or spring problems. The logic is understandable: the door doesn’t move properly, the opener is the thing with a motor, so the opener must be at fault.
In reality, the opener is only meant to guide a balanced door, not lift a dead weight. When the balance is off, the opener strains, its force settings trip, and it reverses or stops. Replacing it fixes nothing, and the new unit burns out on the same underlying problem. If you’re troubleshooting from that end, it’s worth ruling out the mechanical side before looking at the opener itself.

Keep the bottom of the door area dry where you can — clearing snow and salt buildup from the threshold matters more than people expect. Look at both bottom brackets a couple of times a year for fraying. And if the door ever starts running crooked, deal with it then, not in six months. Uneven travel is what accelerates the wear in the first place.
