Why Your Door Drags on the Floor: Hinge Sag, Frame Shift and Slab Warp Explained

The trouble is that dragging is almost never the actual fault — it is the symptom of something that moved, and whatever moved is usually still moving.

Start by finding where the door touches
Close the door slowly and watch the gap around the whole perimeter. That gap — the reveal — should be roughly even, about the width of a nickel, top to bottom and side to side. Where the reveal disappears tells you what failed.
Tight at the top of the latch side, dragging at the bottom of the latch side
This is the classic hinge sag pattern. The door has rotated slightly around the hinges, the top corner has pulled in toward the frame, and the opposite bottom corner has dropped onto the floor. Nine times out of ten the top hinge is the culprit, not the bottom one.
Even contact along the whole bottom edge
The door has not rotated — it has descended, or the floor has come up. Look for new flooring, a swollen subfloor near a bathroom or entry, or a threshold that has been shimmed by a previous repair.
Tight along the hinge side
The frame itself has shifted inward. That points at the structure around the opening rather than the door, and it is the one pattern worth taking seriously right away.
The four real causes
1. Hinge screws that never reached framing
Most factory door hinges ship with short screws that bite only into the jamb — a thin piece of trim lumber, not structure. Over years of use, the weight of the door works those screws loose and the top hinge pulls away from the jamb by a few millimetres. That tiny movement at the hinge becomes a centimetre or more of drop at the far bottom corner, because the door is a lever.
This is the cheapest problem on the list and the most common. Replacing the two centre screws in the top hinge with 3-inch screws that reach the stud behind the jamb often lifts the door back into place on the spot.
2. Seasonal swelling
Wood and engineered slabs absorb moisture. In a humid Toronto July a solid wood door can gain enough width to bind against the latch jamb, then release again in January. If the door drags only in summer and behaves all winter, you are looking at moisture, not hardware — and planing the door down in August guarantees a drafty, rattling door by February.
3. Frame movement

You can spot this by checking whether the frame’s own corners are square and whether the head jamb is level. When the frame is out, adjusting the door alone will never hold — the opening has to be reset. 4. A warped or delaminated slab
Exterior doors take sun on one face and conditioned air on the other. Over time the slab can bow. Lay a straightedge diagonally across the door face — if you can slide a finger under the middle, the slab is cupped and no amount of hinge work will make it close cleanly.
What you can safely try yourself
- Tighten every hinge screw, starting with the top hinge. If a screw spins without biting, the hole is stripped — a longer screw or a glued hardwood dowel in the hole will fix it.
- Check the threshold. Many exterior thresholds have adjustment screws under the cap that raise or lower the sill. If the door only catches at the sill, backing those off a quarter-turn at a time may be the whole repair.
- Clean the sweep. Grit packed into a door sweep or weatherstrip drags and mimics a fitment problem.
What to avoid: planing the slab, shimming the hinges with folded cardboard, or removing the strike plate to “make it reach.” Each of those hides the movement instead of correcting it, and each makes the eventual real repair more expensive.
When it stops being a maintenance job
Call for a proper assessment when any of the following show up:
- The deadbolt no longer throws fully into the strike, even when you lift the door.
- You can see daylight at one corner of a closed exterior door.
- The drag appeared suddenly rather than gradually — sudden movement usually means structural movement.
- The frame is visibly out of square, or the drywall above the opening has cracked diagonally.
- The door is fire-rated. Rated assemblies cannot be planed, drilled or shimmed without voiding the rating.
