The 60-Second Garage Door Balance Test That Predicts Spring and Opener Failure

A door that has drifted out of balance is a door whose springs are losing tension and whose opener is straining to make up the difference. Both are on a countdown, and one simple test tells you where you stand.
Why balance is the number that matters
A sectional garage door weighs somewhere between 60 and 200 kilograms depending on material, insulation and glazing. The opener does not lift that weight. The springs do. The opener’s job is to guide the door and overcome friction — it’s a positioning motor, not a hoist.
When the springs are correctly tensioned, the door is effectively weightless. Lift it halfway by hand and it stays there. When spring tension drops — and it drops gradually, because a torsion spring loses a little on every cycle — the door starts to have real weight again. The opener compensates silently, drawing more current, running hotter, and putting load through a gear train that was never designed to carry it.
By the time you notice anything, two things have usually already happened: the springs are near the end of their cycle life, and the opener has taken damage it won’t recover from.
How to run the test
This takes a minute. Do it with the door closed and nobody standing in the opening.
- Disconnect the opener. Pull the emergency release cord — the red handle hanging from the trolley — with the door fully closed. Never pull it with the door open; if the springs are already weak the door can come down hard.
- Lift the door by hand to about waist height. It should move smoothly and feel light. A well-balanced door of any size can be lifted with one hand without straining.
- Let go. This is the whole test. A balanced door stays roughly where you left it, maybe creeping a few centimetres.
- Repeat at head height. Balance can be correct at one point and wrong at another, which usually means a cable or drum problem rather than a spring problem.
- Lower it by hand and reconnect the opener. Most trolleys re-engage when you run the opener through one cycle.
Reading the result
- Stays put: balance is good. Repeat in six months.
- Falls or drifts down: the springs have lost tension. This is the common failure and it gets worse from here.
- Rises on its own: over-tensioned. Less common, usually after an amateur spring adjustment, and it puts a different but equally real strain on the opener and the door top section.
- Feels heavy or jerky through the travel: that’s friction, not balance — worn rollers, bent track, or dry bearings.
- One side leads the other: a cable has slipped or a drum has moved. Stop using the door.
What a failed test is actually telling you
The springs are near the end of their life
Torsion springs are rated in cycles, and a typical builder-installed spring is specified for roughly 10,000 cycles. A household that opens the door four times a day reaches that in about seven years. Tension loss is the visible symptom of cycle wear, so a door that drifts is a door whose springs are telling you their remaining life is short. Replacing them on a planned Tuesday is a very different experience from replacing them at 7am when the door is stuck shut with a car behind it, which is the usual way garage door spring repair gets scheduled.
The opener has been working overtime
An opener carrying real door weight strips gears, burns out capacitors, and trips its own force sensors intermittently. The frustrating part is that the symptoms look like opener faults — reversing partway, stopping short, needing two presses — so people replace the opener, and the new one fails the same way because nothing was ever wrong with the old one. If your garage door opener is behaving unpredictably, run the balance test before you buy anything.

If balance is fine at one height and wrong at another, or the door sits visibly crooked, the springs may be healthy and the lift cables may be the problem. Cables fray at the bottom bracket where they collect water and road salt, and they unwind unevenly off the drums once a strand goes. This is one of the few garage door jobs with no safe DIY version — the cable runs under the same tension as the spring — and it belongs with someone who does garage door cable repair routinely.
Two more checks worth doing at the same time
The reversal test. Lay a flat piece of timber on the floor in the door’s path and close the door with the opener. It must reverse on contact. If it doesn’t, the force setting is wrong or the mechanism is faulty, and that’s a genuine safety issue in a house with kids or pets.
The photo-eye test. With the door closing, wave something through the beam near the floor. The door should reverse immediately. Misaligned sensors are the single most common reason a door won’t close, and they get knocked out of line by bikes, bins and snow shovels constantly.
How often, and when to just call someone
Twice a year is plenty — spring and autumn works well, since the temperature swing is when metal fatigue tends to show itself. Do it when you’re already in the garage swapping tires or putting away the mower and it costs you nothing.
Call a technician rather than experimenting if the door fails the balance test, if you can see a gap in a spring coil, if a cable looks frayed or has come off its drum, or if the door is crooked in the opening. Torsion springs store a serious amount of energy and the adjustment tools are not the ones in your toolbox.
